SPOT VALLEY, St James — The chip did not fall far from the block when 15- year-old Sherrise Walker decided that her sport of choice would be golf.

Her father, Cebert Walker, a renown golf player is the head professional at Cinnamon Hills Golf course and is a former national representative. His three children, including Sherisse, a ninth grade student at Spot Valley High in St James, all gravitated to the golf, as a result of their father’s involvement with the sport.

One of Sherrise’s elder sister earned a scholarship to Grambling State University in the United States, and the Spot Valley High student hopes to follow in her footsteps in another few years.

For now however, Sherrise is concentrating on her school work, while at the same time improving her golf game and lowering her 15 handicap in an effort to cementing her place on the national teams.

Sherisse who spoke to Observer West recently, is now preparing to representing Jamaica on the Junior team to the Caribbean Championships in the Dominican Republic later this month as well as the Senior team to St Kitts in August.

She told Observer West that she has been playing the game “as long as I can recall” but started playing tournaments at the at the age of nine.

There is a balance she adds however, as she only plays three days a week — Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays — while trying to make time “for being a teenager.”

The time on the course she says is spent trying to improve her short game on the greens, as her long game — driving the ball — is pretty well developed.
