JAMAICA completed their participation of the 7th staging of the NACAC Under-23 Championships last weekend in Irapuato, Mexico with six medals: one gold, one silver and four bronze.

Traves Smikle took Jamaica’s lone gold with a championship record 62.11 metres in the discus, beating American Mason Finley (59) and Trinidad & Tobago’s Quincy Wilson (57.98).

K’Don Samuels earned a silver in the pole vault after clearing 5.35 metres. Americans Michael Woepse and Logan Cunningham won gold and bronze with marks of 5.40m and 5.30m respectively.

In the Men’s 4x100m relay, Paul McPearson, Ramone McKenzie, Akheem Gauntlett and Akino Ming secured Jamaica the bronze clocking 39.67 seconds. USA won in 38.94 seconds ahead of The Bahamas, 39.65.

Jodi-Ann Muir ran 52.44 seconds for bronze in the Women’s 400m won by American Rebecca Alexander in a championship record 51.13. Haitian Marlena Wesh was second in 51.23.

In the Women’s 400m hurdles, Danielle Dowie grabbed another bronze for Jamaica when she posted 58.23 seconds. The Americans were one-two with Cassandra Tate, 55.62, and Ellen Wortham, 57.10. Yanique Haye was fourth in a time of 58.35.

The final bronze came in the Women’s 4x400m relay when Haye, Dowie, Ladonna Richards, and Muir registered 3:34.29. USA won in 3:28.64 while Trinidad & Tobago were second in 3:33.03.

Eleven championship records fell over the three days as more than 400 athletes competed in 44 track and field events.

In the last edition in 2010, in Miramar, Florida, United States, finished with 11 medals: one gold, five silver, and five bronze.
