LONDON, England — Jamaica celebrates the 50th anniversary of its independence from Great Britain on August 6th and sprinters Usain Bolt and Asafa Powell can think of no bigger way to celebrate but to have the National Anthem ring out on London’s Olympic stadium at the globe’s biggest sporting spectacular.

The finals of the men’s 100m, the blue riband event of the entire Games will be contested on the afternoon session of the third day of track and field competition on August 5th and the medal ceremony will be the next day.

At a press conference in London Thursday, both sprinters, who say they are ready to run fast and who will contest the 100m along with Yohan Blake, all but promised a fitting birthday gift for the island.

In addition to the usual pressure to compete Bolt said there will be a little more Jamaicans will be expecting a birthday gift, “There is a little more pressure as everyone definitely wants us to win,” he said “they would love to see a World Record just to say ‘happy birthday’ to Jamaica, so for me it is really a great moment for Jamaica so I am really focused to go out and do my best.”

Powell said earlier there was a feeling of excitement in the camp as “everyone was excited, including the athletes and there is a lot of attention on Jamaica right now and Jamaica’s 50th so everyone is really pushing hard to make it a good one.”
