USAIN Bolt performing the Gully Creeper dance after his record-breaking victories at the 2008 Olympics in Beijing, China, will go down as one of the Games’ unforgettable images.

The creator of that move was David ‘Ice’ Smith, a member of the flamboyant Black Roses crew. After Bolt’s version, Ice was ranked as one of dancehall’s finest dancers.

Unfortunately, his glory was short-lived. He was murdered less than five months after Bolt showed his dance to millions on the world stage inside the Bird’s Nest in Beijing.

According to the St Andrew Central police, Smith was shot and killed on the morning of December 26, 2008, moments after he exited a bar on Keesing Avenue in Kingston, where he had gone to purchase cigarettes.

Ice was the second high-profile dancer of the crew to be murdered. In January, 2005, Gerald ‘Bogle’ Levy was shot dead at a service station in Half-Way Tree, Kingston.

“Ice didn’t just move his body on the dance floor…he was a great dancer who was extremely creative,” said Marlon ‘Ovamarz’ Hardy, a member of the Above A Dem dance group.

Ovamarz does not believe Ice got the recognition he deserved because of his past run-ins with the law.

“As a dancer he was ranked among the best, but there were some persons who didn’t gravitate towards his personality that much,” Overmarz explained. “But once an individual gets to know him personally, he/she would realise that he was a great person.”

Ovamarz is a dancer/deejay and founder of Above A Dem Squad. He is best known for dance moves like Nuh Linga, Raging Bull, Now You see Me and No Behaviour.

Like Ice, Ovamarz’ creativity was showcased on the world stage when Bolt did the Nuh Linga in Beijing.

“I got goose pimples and was in total disbelief,” he recalled.

Overmarz said the Nuh Linga has made him an immortal in dancehall choreography.
