BARBADOS, St Michael — Dreadlocked Calypso singer Michael ‘Mikey’ Mercer is basking in musical glory after being named the Sweet Soca, People’s Monarch and Party Monarch competition winner for the 2012 Crop Over season.

Mercer winning songs were We Loose and No Behaviour, respectively. We Loose was also named Tune of the Crop.

“This is really a wonderful feeling. I am really humbled and thankful. I am very appreciative of all my supporters,” Mercer, 29, told the Jamaica Observer.

Mercer, no stranger to the competition, was Party Monarch last year with his winning entry Pavement Anticipation.

The singer got his breakthrough in 2004 with Come Together.

“This was the single that dominated the airwaves and earned me a second place in the annual Party Monarch Competition,” he told the Jamaica Observer.

The song later claimed the Road March title. He followed up with hits such as Show Me Now and Don’t Hold Back.

However, in 2006 his single Dat Time Again made it to the Party Monarch finals.

“I decided to make another musical step and became one of the lead

singer of the soca band Electrik which became one of the leading bands in Barbados especially throughout the 2005-2006 Crop Over season,” he said.

After leaving the band in early 2007, Mercer went on to release other tracks for the Crop Over season like My Time, More and Bashment Bacchanal.

He has performed at venues in Canada, United States, Trinidad and Tobago, and St Lucia.
