D’Park, Vauxhall to clash in rugby final

DEFENDING champions Duhaney Park Red Sharks will take on perennial rivals Vauxhall Vultures in the final of the National Club Rugby League Championship.

In semi-final results last Saturday, Duhaney Park clipped Maxfield Star Steppers, 31-30, while last year’s runners-up and four-time national champions Vauxhall pounded GC Foster Lions, 26-12, at Up Park Camp.

Duhaney Park and Maxfield matched evenly in the 80-minute contest. Tries from Robert Rodney, Jermaine Pinnock, Stephen Brown and a double from Fabion Turner put the defending champions on their way. Marvin Thompson kicked five goals.

For Maxfield, Renaldo Wade, Allesandro Allen, Dushane Alfred, Akeem Trewick and Oshane Eddie scored tries, with Eddie kicking three goals and Joseph Shae two.

With the score tied up 30-30 and two minutes remaining,

Red Sharks marched up the field from the ensuing kick-off and picked out Roy Calvert. He delivered the winning point with a drop-goal in the final with just seconds to go.

Earlier, Carlyle Burger, Andrew Fong, Fabian Atkinson, Jahdeek Clarke, Richardo Robinson and Everton Richards had tries for Vauxhall with Tiege Jackson kicking a conversion.

GC Foster’s Ryan Grant scored two tries and kicked two goals to account for their total. Vauxhall drove home their victory built by a superior set of forwards who battered their opponents with bruising runs from kickoff.

The onslaught was too much for GC Foster whose defenders wilted under the pressure and attacking plays proved ineffective.

The final will be played on September 8 at Up Park Camp at 4:00 pm after a eight-team campaign that began on June 23.

The finalists have met four times in the championship decider with Vauxhall winning on three occasions.
