DEFENDING champions St Andrew High defeated Eltham High, 48-10, as the 2012 ISSA/Digicel Urban Area High School Senior League netball competition got underway last week.

The Jennifer Brown-coached aggregation proved too strong for their opponents.

The victors’ Junior League team also won in their first game, which was also reduced to eight minutes for each quarter due to the late start. The game should have been played for 40 minutes, but was played for 24 minutes. St Andrew High beat Eltham High Junior 22-6.

In other Junior League games played throughout last week: former champions The Queen’s School crushed Hydel High, 42-14; Excelsior High defeated Jonathan Grant High, 22-8; Innswood High got past Oberlin High, 25-23; Norman Manley High outscored Camperdown High, 24-20; Tarrant High beat Edith Dalton-James, 21-15; Papine High rushed past Immaculate Conception, 26-10; St Catherine High whipped Charlie Smith High, 25-4; Holy Childhood High edged Ardenne, 16-15, and Vauxhall High crushed Greater Portmore High, 32-2.

In Senior League action: Camperdown High beat Norman Manley, 33-25; Greater Portmore outscored Vauxhall High, 25-18, and Holy Childhood High outscored Ardenne, 22-16.

Meanwhile, both the Junior and Senior League competitions continue today with the following matches: Defending champions St Hugh’s, who have George Pryce as their new coach for the first time this season, will journey to Denham Town to play their first game of the season.

St Hugh’s are the winners of Open Rally that was held earlier this month. Other matches scheduled are Jonathan Grant vs Norman Manley; Ascot High vs Camperdown; Excelsior vs Oberlin; Alpha Academy vs Innswood; Greater Portmore High vs St Mary’s College; Charlie Smith vs Tarrant High; Edith Dalton-James vs Immaculate Conception; Papine vs Greater Portmore and Tivoli High vs St Catherine High.

Matches in the Junior League are scheduled to begin at 2:30, while the Senior League games will start at approximately 3:30. Home teams are named first.
