MONTEGO BAY, St James — ISSA/Gatorade/Digicel daCosta Cup schoolboy football history was created on Saturday when the first pair of coaching brothers — Aston and Dean Tomlin — guided their respective schools to the Inter-zone round.

Aston guided Tacius Golding High to a last-gasp second-place finish in Zone N, just edging Central High on goal difference for their second straight berth in the Inter-zone, while Dean’s Bellefield High were second in Zone F behind Manchester High.

Both men also coach the track teams at their respective schools.

Tacius Golding, who first qualified for the Inter-zone last season, beat former many-time champions Vere Technical 3-1 on Saturday to get past Central High who came into the round as the zone leaders, as both finished on 11 points, two behind winners Kemps Hill High.

Tacius Golding finished on zero goal difference, scoring nine goals and conceding the same, while Central finished with a minus two goal difference after going down 1-0 Central while needing only a draw to top the zone.

For the schools to meet, they would have to win their respective Inter-Zone groups — Bellefield will play in Zone Three along with St Elizabeth Technical, Spalding High and Lennon High.

Tacius Golding are in Zone Seven where they will face Garvey Maceo, Paul Bogle High and Brimmervale High.

Meanwhile, a number of schools will be returning to the Inter-Zone for the first time in many years.

York Castle High, who beat Marcus Garvey on goal difference for second place in Zone I, are returning to the Inter-Zone for the first time in 20 years, while Maggotty High, one of two schools who advanced as ‘best third’ place, will be playing after the first round for the first time since the 1999 season, 13 years ago.

Seaforth High from Zone O and Happy Grove from Zone L are also breaking long absences from the Inter-zone round that starts on October 31.
