JAS urges caution in sector
KINGSTON, Jamaica — The Jamaica Agricultural Society (JAS) is urging all famers and fisher folk to take the necessary precautions to protect their lives and property as Tropical Storm Sandy threatens the island.
Among the measures JAS has recommended to prevent loss of property and produce are:
• Prune overhanging trees
• Secure plants and seedlings in an indoor area
• Ensure that drains are cleaned
• Disconnect all electrical fixtures on farm
• Store chemicals, fertilisers and pesticides in a safe location, away from children and contamination with food and water supply
• Secure farm machinery and tools
Additionally, livestock farmers are asked to ensure that enough feed, medication and water is stored and animals are kept in areas that are clean and safe.
The JAS also suggests that animals are tagged and photographs are taken of them.
