DESPITE extensive clean-up operations at the Palisadoes International Raceway in Kingston after Hurricane Sandy’s passage last Wednesday, the track is not race-ready.

Rains and winds associated with Sandy’s category one status heaped debris and water on the track and forced a cancellation of last Sunday’s meet.

Neil Williams, Jamaica Karting Association (JKA) president, was grateful for the support the group received for the clean-up project.

“I want to thank everyone who came out to help, especially the JKA executives, but there is still a bit of work to be done in cleaning up the debris. The track isn’t ready for driving as it needs to be washed and vacuumed to avoid any damage to engines,” he told Auto by email.

“The track was covered in water in some areas, stones in others, and several of the tyre safety barriers were broken,” he continued.

The track also suffered some structural damage at the edges nearest the sea.

“This will have to be addressed before racing can resume. Until then, we’ll continue cleaning up over this weekend,” the president said.

The JKA has scheduled clean-up for 12 noon to 5:30 pm on Saturday and Sunday.

“All are welcome. They just need to bring a rake, a broom, and gloves,” he said.
