Guards in UTech beating detained
TWO security guards implicated in the beating of a male student, allegedly caught in a compromising position with another man in a bathroom at the Papine cmapus of the University of Technology last Thursday, have been taken into police custody.
“They are detained,” a highly placed source told the Jamaica Observer last night.
The two guards, who were employed to Marksman Security Limited, were video-taped assaulting the male student who had sought refuge in the guard room from a mob of other students. The video was placed on YouTube.
The incident has drawn widespread condemnation from members of the public and various groups, including the Jamaicans for Justice and gay rights advocates the Jamaica Forum for Lesbians All-Sexuals and Gays. Several groups abroad have also condemned the incident, which was covered by the international media.
On Friday, Marksman announced that the guards were dismissed as their actions were not in keeping with the company’s policies.
