MONTEGO BAY, St James — The Ministry of Education has welcomed the Learning Corner — which constitutes the Junior Study Centre for primary schools — the Jamaica Observer’s most recent publication, with open arms.

Speaking last week at the official launch of the educational publication at Corinaldi Primary School in Montego Bay, Director of Region Four in the Ministry of Education Hillary Foster lauded the newspaper for its continued educational projects.

“The Ministry of Education welcomes the initiative that motivates the children to learn and provides students with extra support and assistance in their preparation for examinations and help to maximise their potential,” Foster said.

“Let me on behalf of the Ministry of Education thank the Jamaica Observer for this publication. Jamaica Observer has always played an integral role in assisting our teachers, our parents and our students and we have seen other publications such as the CXC Lecture series and the Study Centre Guide,” she added.

Noting that the media play a dominant role in the learning process, Foster forecast that the Learning Corner will play a significant role in charting a successful path in the push by primary school students’ towards higher education.

“Media has the potential to shape personalities, change the way we perceive and understand the world and our immediate reality. This publication will make an impact in the classrooms and in the homes. Lessons presented are relevant, meaningful and aligned in the curriculum and of course are aligned to the students. The education of our students has always been our focus and when the media is added to the mix we are assured of the positive outcomes,” the head of the Ministry of Education Region Four said.

Principal of the Corinaldi Primary School Cynthia Munroe also lauded the Observer for the production of the Learning Corner which contains lessons in Grade Six Achievement Test (GSAT) , Grade Four Literacy and Numeracy Tests.

“I thank the Observer for producing such a paper that assist students with the curriculum they study and embellish their understanding,” Munroe said.

Jamaica Observer’s Regional Sales Coordinator Vernon Webb explained that Corinaldi Primary has for a number of years topped the sales of the Study Centre in western Jamaica, a feat which they have also managed to achieve on a national level on a couple occasions.

” Corinaldi Primary has a special place in my heart. This is a school that I have been working with over the years as it relates to our publication of the Teenage Observer — now to the Learning Corner — and I am telling you over all these years they have come out number one in terms of the sales at least two years they have been the national leaders,” Webb said adding that Corinaldi has excelled in academics, the performing arts among other disciplines.

He explained that the Observer wants to partner with all schools with their educational publications.

“The Observer wants to work with schools right across to promote our educational publications. The Learning Corner is but one such publication and it is geared primarily for the infant to primary level,” Webb noted.

“Prior to this we had one publication that had to be split between primary and high schools now we have this publication and this is what we are here to launch this morning we have absolute great support from Corinaldi in this regard,” he said.
