IOC threatens to suspend India, Kuwait
LAUSANNE, Switzerland (AP) — The International Olympic Committee (IOC) is threatening to suspend the national Olympic committees of India and Kuwait because of government interference.
The IOC says it will consider the sanctions at its executive board meeting on December 4-5 unless the situations are resolved.
The IOC says it has expressed “severe concerns” for more than two years about interference in the Indian Olympic Association’s elections. The IOC says the issues have not been fixed and “the IOA is now at risk of suspension”.
The IOC also says it is prepared to impose a new suspension on Kuwait.
The Kuwaiti body had previously been suspended for more than two years. The punishment was lifted in July following guarantees that legislation would be passed to end interference.
But the IOC says Kuwait has failed to enact the new laws by this week’s deadline.
