ST. GEORGE’S, Grenada – The National United Front (NUF) was launched here on Tuesday night promising to provide an alternative to the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC) and the main opposition New National Party (NNP).

“You have finally found a party you can vote for in 2013,” said former environment minister Glynis Roberts, telling supporters “we do not have all the answers for Grenada, but in moving forward, we are declaring that we do not want to any longer to be part of the problem.

“In other words, we will not open the old playbook, petty politics, quasi-dictatorship, corruption and laziness abound. The era of saying one thing and doing another must come to an end,” Roberts told supporters.

With the motto “United for People with the People” Roberts said “we are here to announce tonight, that though this dream of change has been delayed it is not forever denied; that though too many opportunities were squandered, they are not forever squashed.

“That is why it must be known that the National United Front is the real keeper of the flame that was lit on July 08 2008,” she said.

Roberts, along with former tourism minister Peter David, former foreign minister Karl Hood and prominent trade unionist Chester Humphrey were expelled from the NDC in September after Prime Minister Tillman Thomas accused them of working against the interest of the party that came to power in 2008.

Roberts was flanked by Valdon Paul, a one-time personal assistant to Prime Minister TThomas, and one of the main organizers of his victory in his St Patrick’s East constituency and Jerome Joseph, a founder of the NDC.

“With this new movement, we have a chance to show that we have learnt from our collective experience, not chastened by it; that the bruises of the past have made us determined, not despondent,” she said, adding “let the naysayers say this is just a dream. But every glorious reality started with an amazing dream. Let the world know that change delayed, is not change denied.”

In her address, Roberts spoke of the disappointment she and many others felt in the problems facing the NDC that came to power in 2008 winning 11 of the 15 seats at stake.

“The dream lives on and the hope will be carried forward; the coalition will be re assembled and the people shall inherit its benefits,” she told supporters.

Joseph said that the party is mobilising ahead of its first convention in 2013.

“Building a political party is hard work and some of you have done it before and definitely we can do it again,” said Joseph, a former NDC chairman.
