The ridiculous attempt by the National Water Commission to impose another rate increase on the three out of 10 consumers who account for all of the water paid for is without doubt a cruel and inhumane suggestion.

After the NWC replaced their old meters with new ones, the cost of water went up by at least three times for the already beleaguered consumers.

I had the personal experience the other day when my dog bit through a plastic pipe which resulted in water escaping for a few hours. Before I was able to locate the lock-off, my water “use” jumped from an average of under $2k per month to $25k for that month.

I am not complaining about the dramatic increase which was due to my dog’s errant behaviour, but to point out how extremely efficient these new meters are, and if they are installed islandwide and the NWC makes even a half-hearted attempt to collect from the other 70 per cent of its consumers who are currently not paying one red cent, they will have more than adequate funds to feed all of their supporters who seem to be treating the National Water Commission as a big fiasco.
