Coach ecstatic with Queen’s historic double
THE Queen’s School emerged double champions when they won both the Junior and Senior League netball titles at the 2012 ISSA/Digicel Urban High Schoolgirls final at the Leila Robinson Courts at the Independence Park Complex on Wednesday.
It was just reward for the Marvette Anderson-coached girls who were brilliant in dethroning St Hugh’s and St Andrew Hig in the respective Junior and Senior leagues.
The Queen’s were winning the double as well as the Senior League title for the first time. In the process, they avenged last year’s defeat against St Andrew.
In the Junior final, The Queen’s defeated St Hugh’s, 32-29. They secured the Senior crown by topping St Andrew, 35-24, in two exciting matches.
Anderson was more than delighted when the final whistle brought the last match to its completion.
“It was a team effort by the players and we are very proud to accomplish this feat,” said Anderson. She said when the team was down midway the second quarter, she never gave up hope.
“The players really played extremely and proved that they are true champions. They gave it their all and I’m really proud of them,” she said.
Meanwhile, losing coach Jennifer Brown said she was not disappointed as it was the first match she has lost since last year, but she was still proud of the players.
“They played very well and we worked very hard to reach the final. The players failed to capitalise on the turnovers and missed quite a few easy shots… Queen’s began to close the lead before they started to lose their composure, and a little nervousness started to creep into the players,” Brown said.
Brown congratulated Queen’s on a hard-fought victory: “We had beaten them in the second round, but once they got going, they would be coming at us and that they have done in this final.”
In the Junior decider, The Queen’s led 11-6, 17-16 and 26-22 before their 32-29 triumph. For The Queen’s, Simone Gordon scored 30 from 45 attempts, while for St Hugh’s, Kadie-Ann Dehaney notched 28 from 31.
The Senior final saw Queen’s trailing 8-10 after the first quarter before taking a 17-16 half-time lead. They led a 24-20 after the third stanza and outscored St Andrew in the final quarter to win 35-28.
Khadijah Williams scored 26 from 39 attempts for Queen’s, while Tiffany Clarke got 15 from 25 attempts.
In the third-place Junior playoff, Camperdown defeated Norman Manley, 24-19, while St Catherine bested St Hugh’s, 24-22, in the Seniors third-place playoff.
The Queen’s will now prepare to meet the Rural Area Junior and Senior League champions, which will be decided at Manchester High courts today.
St Elizabeth Technical (STETHS) will meet Denbigh High in the Junior League final, while Holmwood face Foga Road in the Senior League final at 11:30 and 12:30 pm, respectively.
