Henry lands treble at All Ja Senior Champs
JAMAICA’S ace badminton player Gareth Henry clinched the triple at the All Jamaica Senior Championships on Sunday, winning the singles, men’s and mixed doubles at Constant Spring Golf Club.
Henry rallied from a set down to overpower Garron Palmer, 19-21, 21-14, 21-18, in the men’s singles in a thrilling encounter between two players very familiar with each other’s style of play.
Henry and Palmer combined to secure the men’s doubles crown, beating Dennis Coke and Anthony McNee, 21-23, 21-17, 21-17.
With a world singles ranking of 174, Henry teamed with his sister Geordine Henry to earn a walkover in the final against injured Palmer (leg cramps) and Christine Leyow-Mayne in the mixed doubles.
As Henry delivered amongst the men, 16-year-old Katherine Wynter, the national junior champion, added the senior title to her résumé.
The St Andrew High student prove too much for Alya Lewis who retired hurt in the third and deciding game. Wynter won 17-21, 21-9, 6-1. Lewis said she was feeling pain in her arm.
Wynter and Ruth Williams came up short in the women’s doubles as Christine Leyow-Mayne and Trinidadian Olympian Debra O’Conner won 21-4, 21-12.
The next badminton competition will be the Schools All-Island Finals in January with the Tournament of Kings set for later that month or early February.
