Man United pull clear

EUROPEAN FOOTBALL ROUND-UP

EPL: Manchester United are three points clear atop the table after City drew 1-1 with Everton and they beat Reading in a game that saw seven goals in the first 35 minutes. Reading led twice and Wayne Rooney had a brace before Robin van Persie scored the winning goal in the 35th minute.

Chelsea meanwhile, crashed to an embarrassing 3-1 defeat at as a deeply underwhelming Rafa Benitez changeover continues. An inspired Mohamed Diame second-half performance saw the Blues’ early lead wiped out, while across town in West London, Tottenham routed rivals Fulham 3-0 as Jermaine Defoe scored a brace to continue his prolific form.

Arsenal were booed off at the Emirates as they went down to two Michu goals in the dying moments of the match against Swansea.

High-flying West Brom were pegged back yet again as they were clipped 1-0 by Stoke while Liverpool beat Southampton by the same scoreline.

Norwich beat Sunderland 2-1 while QPR drew 1-1 with Aston Villa.

Real claim Madrid derby

La Liga: Barcelona went six points clear as Real Madrid pegged back Atletico in the derby. A wonderful CR7 free-kick got Los Blancos on their way before Mesut Ozil sealed the deal in the second-half.

Barca had earlier marched past Bilbao 5-1 with Lionel Messi almost inevitably scoring a brace. Valencia continued their woeful start as they were trounced 5-2 by Real Sociedad despite Roberto Soldado’s best efforts.

Getafe clipped Malaga 1-0 with Osasuna overcoming Vallecano by a similar margin while Betis’ Ruben Castro netted a brace in their 3-2 win over Deportivo. Granada and Espanyol ended goalless. Celta and Levante and Mallorca and Zaragoza both ended 1-1.

Top teams march on

Serie A: Juventus were comfortable as Claudio Marchisio’s brace and Sebastian Giovinco’s stellar performance gave them an easy 3-0 win in the Turin derby against Torino.

Napoli also eased past their opponents as Edinson Cavani netted a brace in their 5-1 rout of Pescara. Inter were not as impressive but did what was needed, getting past Palermo 1-0. Lazio completed what was a good day for the top four as they overcame Parma 2-1.

AC Milan continued their recovery with a Stephan El Shaarawy double in their 3-1 beating of Catania. Mattia Destro also scored a brace in Roma’s 3-1 win at lowly Siena while Udinese dispatched Cagliari 4-1.

Bologna lifted themselves from immediate relegation trouble with a 2-1 triumph over Atalanta while Chievo beat Genoa 4-2 in a six-goal thriller. Fiorentina drew 2-2 with Sampdoria.

Der Klassiker ends even

Bundesliga: The monumental clash between Bayern Munich and Borussia Dortmund with Germans affectionately call ‘Der Klassiker’ ended even as neither side was truly able to eke out an advantage at the Allianz Arena.

The result was better for Munich, who have finally stopped the trend of four straight league losses to Dortmund in the past two seasons. Leverkusen are closest to the Bavarians, eight points behind, after they beat Nuremburg by a lone Stefan Kiessling goal.

Schalke were held to a 1-1 tie by mid-table Monchengladbach, while Augsburg and Freiburg ended similarly. Dusseldorf trounced Frankfurt 4-0, while Bremen’s Marko Arnautovic scored a hat-trick in his side’s 4-1 win at Hoffenheim.

Mainz’ Adam Szalai scored yet again, this time in the last minute of regulation time to beat Hannover 2-1, while bottom-placed Greuther Furth were clipped 1-0 by Stuttgart. Wolfsburg and Hamburg ended 1-1.
