Cliff heads Grammy pack
JIMMY Cliff’s critically-acclaimed Rebirth is among five nominees in the Best Reggae Album category of the 55th Grammy Awards.
The other nominees are: Miracle by the Original Wailers (MRG Recordings); Tomahawk Technique (VP/Atlantic Records) by Sean Paul; New Legend: Jamaica 50th Edition (Mondo Tunes) by Sly and Robbie & the Jam Masters; and Reggae Got Soul: Unplugged On Strawberry Hill (Metropolis Recordings) by Toots and the Maytals.
Distributed by Ume/Sunpower Records, Rebirth marks Cliff’s seventh nomination. He won the award in 1986 with Cliff Hanger.
His latest album was produced by Tim Armstrong of punk/ska group Rancid. It has received rave reviews as being the 64-year-old Cliff’s best work in years.
Miracle includes four songs written by Original Wailers’ singer/keyboardist, Desi Hyson. Erica Newell, former Melody Makers harmony singer, is featured on a cover of Ruby and The Romantics’ Our Day Will Come.
Tomahawk Technique is Sean Paul’s lowest charting album. It has not fared well in the United States, but had enough muscle to scale several European charts.
It is Sean Paul’s third nomination. He won the Best Reggae Album category in 2004 for the multi-platinum set, Dutty Rock.
New Legend: Jamaica 50th Edition is the seventh nomination for Sly and Robbie. They won in 2000 for Friends.
Reggae Got Soul: Unplugged on Strawberry Hill, is Toots and The Maytals’ sixth nomination. Their True Love won in 2005.
Another reggae project which earned a Grammy nomination is the soundtrack to the documentary Marley, which topped the Billboard Reggae Album Chart early this year.
Credited to Bob Marley & the Wailers, it is included in the category, Best Compilation Soundtrack for Visual Media.
The 55th Grammy Awards takes place February 10 in Los Angeles, California at the Staples Centre.
