Toots celebrates Grammy nod
TOOTS & the Maytals’ fifth Grammy nomination comes just ahead of the reggae great’s birthday tomorrow.
A special event is planned in New York City tonight at the Capital Theatre. Toots will ring in his birthday with a concert featuring the Tom Tom Club, which includes Chris and Tina from The Talking Heads.
“I am very happy that the Grammy committee has included this album for consideration along with the others nominated. I have great respect for the artistes in this category,” stated Toots.
Toots & the Maytals’ Unplugged on Strawberry Hill features acoustic performances of such classics as Sweet and Dandy, Monkey Man, Time Tough, Bam Bam, 54-46, Pressure Drop and Do the Reggae — the 1968 single widely credited with naming the genre.
Recorded and filmed live at Island Records founder Chris Blackwell’s Strawberry Hill property in St Andrew, this CD/DVD includes filming of the recording session, along with an official documentary of the artiste’s story.
Toots recently completed a 18-city tour of the United States, his first unplugged tour, in support of its release.
Toots & the Maytals won the 2004 Grammy Award for Best Reggae Album with the all-star duet set, True Love.
