Meadows, Warriors among winners of Hi-Lyte quarters
SPANISH Town Meadows, Denham Town Warriors, MegaMart Magics and Pembroke Hall drew first blood in the Hi-Lyte/Insports Southern Conference Community Basketball League after scoring victories in games one of their best-of-three quarter-final series at the Edward Seaga Courts on Saturday.
Spanish Town defeated Arnett Garden Rockers, 58-50; Denham Town stopped Upper Room Church, 64-56; MegaMart overcame LinkUp Allstars, 58-52, while Pembroke Hall beat Aqua Youths, 70-54.
Meadows dominated Arnett, thanks to 19 points from Junior McDonald and 13 points from Damion Johnson. Vivian Spence and Ochorn Kirkland were Arnett’s topscorers with 17 points and 13 points and 18 rebounds, respectively.
Meadows led from the start, taking a 9-8 lead after the first quarter and were ahead, 26-17, at half-time. They continued to outplay the Rockers in the third quarter and held a 45-28 lead going into the last quarter, which was Arnett’s best period. And although the Rockers won the period by five points, they still lost the game by eight points.
Denham Town had a more difficult task in overcoming Upper Room; however, Deano Hibbert posted a game-high 29 points and received good support from Cleveland Gizzard with 12 points and Charles Watson with eight points and 15 rebounds to take the lead in the series.
Upper Room led 19-18 after the first quarter and were level at 27-27 at the half. They regained the lead at the end of the third quarter after edging the home team, 18-16, for a 45-43 advantage.
But in the final stanza they could find no answer as Denham Town who ran away 21-11 winners for a comfortable win.
Pembroke Hall scored the biggest win of the day, beating Aqua in all four quarters for a convincing win. Andrew Bell led the scoring with 21 points, followed by Joseph Barrett and Narada Wellington with 17 and Orville Bennett with seven and 19 rebounds.
Dovian Wade was Aqua’s topscorer with 14 points, followed by Anthony Richards with 13.
In the night’s other game, Damion Richards posted a game-high 17 points as MegaMart Magics edged LinkUp Allstars. Christopher Douglas was Richards best support with seven points and 11 rebounds.
Aquarie Ferguson was LinkUp’s topscorer with 12 points, followed by Garfield Campbell and Maurice Hanson with nine points, each.
Games two was set for yesterday.
