St Lucia cop detained for helping Jamaican prisoner escape
CASTRIES, St Lucia (CMC) – St Lucia police have detained one of their colleagues for questioning in relation to the escape of a 22-year-old Jamaican national wanted on attempted murder charges and whom they have described as armed and extremely dangerous.
Police Commissioner Vernon Francois told a news conference Tuesday that Jamaican Miguel Garnett and another man were arrested last Friday for the attempted murder of Canadian Adisania Ojo.
Francois said that Ojo sustained multiple gunshot wounds and was taken to the St Jude’s Hospital, south of here, in a critical condition.
Francois said that on Saturday, officers attached to the Vieux Fort Police Station, south of here discovered that Garnet, also known as Deno B’Jorn Thomas, had escaped lawful custody.
“During the course of investigations, one police officer was arrested under suspicion of aiding and abetting the escape of a prisoner. He is currently in police custody,” Francois told reporters.
Francois said that the police were seeking the assistance of the public in re-capturing Garnett, telling them “do not approach this individual as he may be armed and considered extremely dangerous”.
