IRWIN, St James — Two records were broken, one equalled and one established on yesterday’s elimination of the Hanover Co-operative Credit Union/County of Cornwall Athletics Association’s (COCAA) Girls Western Athletics Championships held at Irwin High School.

Rusea’s High School’s Stephanie Barrett set a new mark in the Class One 1,500m, while Manning’s School’s Omesha Locke set a new mark in the Class One discus.

Another Rusea’s High athlete, Shannice Cannigan, equalled the Class One high jump mark, while Hampton High’s Chenelle Myrie became the first winner of the Class Two shot put that was being contested for the first time.

STETHS lead after 16 finals with 144 points, 68 points more than second-placed Manning’s School (76), with a resurgent Rusea’s High half a point behind with 75.5; Herbert Morrison are in fourth place on 50 points, half a point ahead of Hampton High, who round out the top five on 49.5 points.

The finals will be held tomorrow at the Montego Bay Sports Complex along with the boys’ finals.

Barrett, who represented Jamaica at the NACAC Cross Country Championships three weeks ago, clocked 4 minutes 59.21 seconds to break the Class One 1,500m record of 5 minutes 05.59 seconds set last year by STETHS’ Nickesha Williams, well ahead of STETHS’ Acklelia Robertson and Manning’s Tafarian Connell.

Locke hurled the disc 41.09m to break the eight-year-old mark of 40.67m held by former Manning’s athlete Shanika Johnson, set in 2005.

Locke was also second in the shot put with 11.17m behind teammate Rashell Reid’s 11.82m, with Frome Technical’s Shanika Walker third with 10.71m.

Shannice Cannigan cleared 1.65m to equal the record set b y STETHS’ Rochelle Reid two years ago.

Hampton High’s Myrie won the Class Two shot put with 9.05m to beat STETHS’ Mellisa Stevens (8.98m) and Hampton’s Euleen Gene (8.57m).

Also yesterday, STETHS’ Alethia McLaughlin won two events, retaining both the Class Two 1,500m in an easy 5 minutes and 0.15 seconds before outsprinting Rusea’s Barrett to win the 3,000m in one of the most competitive events of the day.

Both athletes ran shoulder to shoulder for most of the race until, with 250 metres to go, McLaughlin kicked and Barrett failed to respond.

Petersfield’s Asain Hall will attempt the Class One triple in the 100m, 200m and 400m, as she leads all three events after the qualifications yesterday.

Hall ran 12.54 seconds to lead the 100m qualifiers ahead of STETHS’ Lashana Dennis’s 12.89, while Green Island’s Ashley Mylrea was third best with 12.97 seconds.

She also led the 200m qualifiers with 24.40 seconds ahead of Manning’s Janelle Williams (25.26 seconds) and Herbert Morrison’s Tasheika Watts, while her 400m time of 58.19 seconds was better than STETHS’ Kimone Green (59.31 seconds) and Irwin High’s Crystal Haughton (1 minute 00.12 seconds).
