CATHERINE HALL, St James — Delano Williams of Munro College produced two brilliant races to retain his Class 1 boys sprint double at the Hanover Co-operative Credit Union’s/COCAA Western High School Championships held at the Montego Bay Sports Complex.

Williams, the IAAF World Junior 200m champion who will also defend the titles at next months’ ISSA/GraceKenendy Boys’ National Championships, set a new meet record and personal best 10.32 seconds (1.5m/s wind) to win the 100m, then ran 20.79 seconds to take the 200m. Both times beating Green Island’s Odail Todd whose 10.39 seconds and 20.90 seconds were personal bests.

Todd, the IAAF World Youth Championships 100m champion had run 21.00 seconds four previous times.

Herbert Morrison’s Gawain Williams was third in the 100m in 10.54 seconds, while Green Island’s Gremeko Whitelock was third in the 200m in

21.70 seconds.

Williams told the Sunday Observer he had not started any speed work yet and this weekend’s meet was just to get points for his school.

“I am on a 400m programme right now, we have not started any speed work yet,” he said.

The athlete, who is qualified to represent Great Britain and who had to run down the fast- starting Todd in both races, said he was surprised by the fast 100m time, “I was not expecting to run so fast, I was just trying to execute my race more than to win here.”

While he predicted that he would be in good form at Champs, Williams said the IAAF World Championships was the aim this season but was not sure whether he would compete for Great Britain or the Turks and Caicos where he was born.

Green Island’s Ashley Mylrea won the Girls’ Class I 100m in an upset over Petersfield’s Asaine Hall in 12.09 seconds; Hall who also won the 200m and 400m clocked 12.14 seconds while STETHS’ Lasahna Dennis was third.

Hall, meanwhile, clocked 24.47 seconds to win the 200m ahead of Mylrea’s 25.13 seconds with Dennis again third in 25.54 seconds and took the 400m in 55.22 seconds, beating STETHS’ Kimone Green-56.36 seconds and Crystal Haughton of

Irwin High.

St Elizabeth Technical Christine Moss took the Class II sprint double with 12.14 seconds and 24.91 seconds while STETHS’s Leroy Francis and Munro College’s Rushane Edward shared the Class II boys 100m and 200m, respectively beating the other into second place in either race.

Kimone Green earlier won the 400m Hurdles Open in a new meet record 1 minute 01.65 seconds beating the old time of 1 minute 03.66 seconds set in 2000 by Victoria Gooden.

Up to press time last night, before the start of the relays, eight new meet records had been set.

Rusea’s High School’s Stephanie Barrett completed a fine double by winning the Class I 800m in a new record 2 minutes 17.49 seconds after winning the 1,500m earlier at the eliminations on Thursday

At press time Munro College and St Elizabeth Technical led their respective boys’ and girls’ sections.

Munro led with 383.5 points followed by defending champions STETHS 275.5, Cornwall College 179, Petersfied 159.5 and Herbert Morrison Technical 155.

STETHS were well on the way to retaining their title, leading with a massive 342.5 points, more than doubling second placed Manning’s who were on 150, Herbert Morrison was next on 120.5 followed by Rusea’s- 103.5 and Petersfield-82.5.
