THE celebrity reality TV show featuring Oscar Pistorius’s slain model girlfriend was shot in Jamaica last summer.

The show, titled Tropika Island of Treasure, shows 29-year-old Reeva Steenkamp enjoying a number of Jamaican attractions, among them swimming with dolphins and rafting on the Martha Brae River.

Yesterday, South Africa’s national broadcaster SABC said it would air the show, yesterday evening.

Tropika Island of Treasure was shot late July through August 2012 at various locations in Jamaica, among them Margaritaville in Negril, Time and Place in Trelawny, and Silver Sands in Trelawny.

It features Steenkamp, as well as several persons, including Jamaicans, competing for one million rand (J$10 million) in prize money.

Yesterday, news reports out of South African said the producers decided not to shelve the show, instead painting its broadcast as a tribute to Steenkamp.

Pistorius, the double amputee Olympian, was arrested and charged with the Valentine’s Day murder of Steenkamp, who was shot multiple times in the predawn hours of Thursday at Pistorius’s house in a gated community in the South African capital, Pretoria.

Reeva’s cousin, Sharon Steenkamp, told The Associated Press yesterday that the family had not been consulted by anyone from the show or SABC, but they were not against it being aired because Reeva “was proud of being in the show”.

“Her last words to us personally was that she wants us to watch it,” Sharon Steenkamp said.

The show’s executive producer, Samantha Moon, also said that the family wanted the show to go ahead.

“They want it on,” said Moon, who works for production company Stimulii. “This is how they want to remember her. This is what she would have wanted.”

Early footage of the TV programme showed the model appearing contemplative and at ease with herself, sitting beneath a beach-front palm, dressed in a strappy top and a yellow, black and dotted bikini, with her blonde hair tied back, Australian online news site news.com.au reported.

A snippet of the programme showed Steenkamp speaking about the need to leave a positive mark on life.

“Not just your journey in life but the way that you go out and make your exit is so important, you have either made an impact in a positive way or a negative way,” Steenkamp said.

“Just maintain integrity and maintain class and just always be true to yourself,” she said. “I’m going to miss you all so much.”

Tropika Island of Treasure has a weekly audience of up to three million.

Yesterday, Pistorius — a multiple Paralympic champion — remained in police custody, charged with murdering Steenkamp in cold blood.

The Associated Press reported his agent, Peet van Zyl, as saying that he has begun cancelling the athlete’s races, one of which was a high-profile rematch next month with fellow double-amputee Alan Oliveira to promote the 2016 Rio Olympics and Paralympics.

Oliveira beat Pistorius — known as the Blade Runner for his high-tech artificial legs — in the 200 meters at the Paralympics in London last year. He and Pistorius were to run a straight 200m on Copacabana beach in Rio de Janeiro on March 31.

“I can’t plan anything,” Van Zyl said of Pistorius’ immediate running career, which was not a priority after the murder charge and Steenkamp’s death. “I will only have him run when he is in a condition to run as a world-class athlete. Physically and mentally fit.”

Pistorius broke down and wept on his first appearance in court on Friday, while his family said yesterday in a statement to the AP that they were “devastated” and in “a state of total shock”.
