JAMAICA’S sub-10 king Asafa Powell was in awe at the turnout for the 15th staging of Sigma Corporate Run held on Sunday in Kingston.

The former 100m world record holder joined the SportsMax team to participate in the corporate run for the first time, along with over 20,000 walkers, runners and wheelchair participants comprising companies, groups and individuals.

Decked in his “I am SportsMax King” branded T-shirt, Powell was excited about contributing to the major annual charity event and setting off the runners alongside Jamaica’s most decorated athlete, Merlene Ottey.

“When I walked to the starting platform and looked out at the droves of people filling the streets of New Kingston it warmed my heart to see Jamaicans coming together to support the cause, which is giving back so much to Jamaica’s children,” said the Olympic 4X100 metres relay gold medallist.

The theme for Sigma Run 2013 was “Healthy Spaces, Smiling Faces”, with all proceeds in aid of the Bustamante Hospital for Children, Jamaica National Children’s Home and the Best Care Lodge.

Powell’s association with SportsMax blossomed naturally as a result of the broadcaster’s involvement with track and field, which has over the years provided the platform which showcases regional talent.

Recently, SportsMax’s Simon Crosskill sat down with Asafa for an exclusive 30-minute interview in which he revealed that he is still in pursuit of that 100m World Championship or Olympic gold.

Powell will be the patron for the next Sigma Run to be staged on February 16, next year.
