CHRISTOFF Bryan of Wolmer’s Boys continued his good build-up to this season’s IAAF World Youth Championships in the Ukraine with winning the men’s high jump at yesterday’s 37th staging of the Gibson Relays at the National Stadium, in a season’s best 2.17m, to retain his title.

Bryan, who will turn 16 years old later this year, had cleared 2.10m twice this season prior to yesterday’s meet and knocked over the bar while attempting what would have been a personal best 2.21m.

Calabar’s Javon Swaby was second with 2.10m.

Jermaine Jackson of MVP won the men’s long jump with a mark of 7.86m, over his own meet record 7.72m, but he was pushed by a 3.6m/s wind well over the allowable limit of 2.0m/s.

On a windy day that affected the jumpers and sprinters, Jackson opened with a big effort of 7.82m, only for the wind to read 4.7m/s. He then fouled the second attempt before a 7.72m effort with 3.9m/s win followed by a 7.65m jump with 0.0 wind.

He then produced his winning jump of 7.86m, as defending champion Clive Pullen of Kingston College finished second with a best effort of 7.68 (4.8m/s wind), while GC Foster’s Orneldo Thomas was third of 7.41m (3.5m/s).

The ladies’ long jump was also affected by wind with St Jago High’s Diana Caldwell winning with a best mark of 5.99m (5.0m/s wind), beating Manchester High’s Annastacia Forrester’s 5.95m (5.1m/s), with another St Jago athlete Ronique Grey taking third with 5.85m (2.6m/s).

Immaculate Conception High’s Safia Morgan won the women’s high jump, beating GC Foster’s Tasha-Gay Bailey on the count back after both cleared 1.75m, while Krista Gay Taylor of Convent of Mercy was third after clearing 1.70m.
