IN the 37th staging of the Gibson Relays, there were a number of spectacles that makes for an exciting Boys and Girls Championships in the coming weeks. Among them were the sprinters from the western-based Green Island High.

Here are some of the other highlights from the meet.

Boys’ Segment

Anchored by ace sprinter Odail Todd, the Green Island quartet sped to a commendable 40.18 seconds in the Class One 4x100m. Coming in behind them were Wolmer’s Boys and Calabar with 40.60 and 40.92 seconds respectively.

Signalling themselves as a team to look out for on the big day in March, Green Island also secured victory in the Class One 4x200m, stopping the clock at 1.25 seconds, two seconds faster than Holmwood Technical and Garvey Maceo who rounded off the top three.

In Class Two, it was St Jago that reigned supreme with a spirited run of 41.26 seconds to finish ahead of Jamaica College with 41.45 seconds and Calabar with 41.47 seconds. It was a bit of a surprise to some as many patrons were expecting the JC quartet to easily dispatch the competing field.

In Class Four, the young boys from Calabar High dismantled the record by registering a time of 44.38 seconds to beat St Jago and Wolmer’s Boys. They erased the old mark of 44.51 seconds set by Wolmer’s Boys three years ago and looked very comfortable doing so, indicating that they have the crop to emerge and follow in the footsteps of schoolmate and speedster Michael O’Hara.

In the Men’s High Jump Open, CARIFTA champion Christoffe Bryan cleared heights of 2.17 metres for first place. Ashani Wright of Jamaica College rounded off the top three with 2.05 metres.

It was almost fitting that one of the best performances of the day brought the meet to a close. Receiving the baton some 30 metres behind, Delano Williams of Munro College chased down the Manchester High anchor leg and coolly took his team to victory in the 4×400 metres Open.

Girls’ Segment

Holmwood Technical showed their sprinting dominance as they secured victories in the Class One and Class Two 4×100 metres. In Class One, the Holmwood quartet sped to 45.10 seconds to finish ahead of archrivals Edwin Allen and The Queen’s School, while in Class Two their winning time was 45.51 seconds, crossing the line ahead of Wolmer’s Girls and St Jago.

In Class Three, Edwin Allen clinched a morale-boosting victory with a time of 45.97 seconds. Claiming second place was the rapidly emerging Hydel High with St Elizabeth Technical rounding off the top three.

Rounding off the girls’ segment for the night was Vere Technical, who secured victory in the 4×400 metres Open. The race was even throughout the first three legs but the dominant force of Sherika Jackson looked to be in fine form as she secured a time of 3.33 seconds for her team. Rounding off the top three was Edwin Allen and Holmwood Technical.
