And The Oscar For the Most Fab Goes to…

While we do care who walks away with the Oscar, let’s face it: we watch awards shows to see what everyone’s wearing and who has the best makeup and hair. And last week’s Oscar awards left us envious of Reese Witherspoon’s voluminous waves and smoky eyes, the messy-yetsophisticated updo sported by Naomi Watts, and Jennifer Lawrence’s pretty buns and naturally gorgeous face. This week we show you how to Get the Look.

Reese Witherspoon

Hair: Classic wave with volume

1. Create a side part in wet hair and brush into place. Lightly mist with shaping hairspray and blow-dry hair in the direction you have combed it. Place hair clips in the sections where you want the waves to start. (About three inches from the root should be the best area to begin.)

2. Using a large crimping iron, crimp hair in 2-inch-wide sections, starting at the front of the face just above the natural arch of your eyebrow. Once all hair is crimped down to the ends, let cool for 10 to 15 minutes to set.

3. With a large soft-bristled brush, brush hair lightly to blend the crimped hair into one beautiful cascading style. To help add extra volume, working from ear to ear, take sections of hair at ear level and backcomb slightly with a teasing comb and a small amount of hair spray. Repeat this in a section about one inch about the first one. Lightly brush the top layer of hair to even everything and give it a good spray to finish the look.

Make-up

1. Mix a bit of illuminating cream with a small amount of foundation and apply sparingly to the face. Use concealer only where needed. Pat loose translucent powder all over to set the makeup and control any shine.

2. Apply a natural light rose shade lightly to the apples of the cheeks, tapering off up into the cheekbone. Using a large brush, dust a little bronzing powder to the temples, forehead, cheeks, and chin.

3. Sweep a natural matte shade to the top of the eyelid just below the brow and into the crease area. Apply a light grey shadow to the lower part of the upper lid, blending it into the natural shadow so there aren’t any harsh lines of colour. With a small shadow brush, apply the grey shadow to the upper and lower lash lines, making sure to blend the lower shadow colour. Lightly smudge black eyeliner pencil into the upper lash line. Use a small amount of natural cream-coloured shadow in the inner corner of the eye to brighten eyes. Apply mascara to upper and lower lashes.

4. Comb out eyebrows and use an eyebrow pencil to define the arch and shape. Comb them once more to blend any harsh lines and soften the colour.

5. Apply a light pink stain to lips.

Hair: A loose and natural take on the twist

1. Blow out hair using a large round comb, alternating the direction you are twisting/rolling your hair while blowing it out. Spray dry hair with hairspray, tousling with fingers. Flip top front of hair down in front of your face, give it a good spray, and flip back.

2. With a large-toothed comb, gather hair to the nape of the neck, keeping all the hair loose while working with it. Take the bulk of your hair and twist, leaving the top front section loose about three inches across your forehead and one inch back. Take the top part of the hair and very loosely incorporate it into the lower section of the hair. Twist hair loosely. Once it’s halfway twisted, turn the hair upward and continue twisting.

3. Grab a handful of hairpins and start pinning the chunky sections of the twist, placing the pins on the side where the direction of the twist is going. Take the outer layer of hair from the opposite side of the twist and pull small sections up and around to the other side of the twist.

4. Using the long end of a teasing comb, take small sections from the outer layers of your hair and pull them slightly out of the twist, just enough to create texture and volume. Use hairpins to pin some of these pieces in slightly different directions, keeping them pinned loosely to the head. By giving your hair a final spray of extra-hold hairspray, your look is complete. Salon Grafix ChromaLogica High Gloss Hairspray is a great spray to give shine and long-lasting hold.

Make-up

1. Apply primer to the entire face and use concealer only where needed. Dust face with a translucent loose powder to help set the make-up and stop shine.

2. Apply a natural pink blush to the apples of the cheeks, sweeping up to the cheekbone.

3. Use a large shadow brush to apply a nude shadow to the entire upper eyelid. With a medium shadow brush, apply a soft grey shadow to the lower part of the top eyelid, and line the bottom lashes with the same shade of shadow. Add a small amount of a light shimmer shadow to the inner corner of the eye to whiten and brighten the eye. Apply mascara to top and bottom lashes.

4. Comb brows, touching up only where needed with a powder brow colour.

5. Apply a fresh pink gloss to lips.

Hair: Twisting buns in a new direction

1. Give hair a good blowout, using a small round brush and alternating the direction that you shape the hair while drying. Once dry, spray well with hairspray, tousling hair with fingers.

2. Take two sections from each side of the head just above the ear. Split each section in half (you’ll end up with four sections total) and lightly twist, stopping and pinning near the lower middle of the hair. (Don’t worry where you are pinning, this is just to keep the twist in form. Once all the twists are done, then you can go back and work on the placement.) Let the twisted pieces of hair hang down with a clip.

3. Gather the rest of your hair into a very loose low ponytail at the nape of the neck. Take the twisted sections of hair and pin them just above the ponytail and incorporate each into the ponytail. Separate the ponytail in the middle and wrap in a bun formation. Pin where needed and finish off with natural-hold hairspray.

Make-up

1. Use concealer only where needed. Pat a

loose translucent powder over the face to set and maintain shine.

2. Apply a fresh pink blush to the apples of the cheeks, sweeping lightly up to the cheekbone.

3. Use a large shadow brush and sweep a matte natural skin tone to the area under the brow. Blend a lightly shimmery smoky grey eye shadow into the natural shadow just above the natural crease of the eye. With a small angled brush, line the upper lash line with black shadow. Line the lower lash line, working from the outside in and blending to prevent any harsh lines. Go over the upper lash line with a black eye pencil. Apply a light coat of mascara to upper and lower lashes.

4. Comb eyebrows, filling in where needed with a powder brow colour.

5. Apply a slightly glossy fresh pink lip stain.
