Outstanding performances at Trials from western Ja athletes

A number of western Jamaica-based athletes turned in outstanding performances at last weekend’s Carifta Trials at the National Stadium in Kingston to set themselves up for selection to the March 29 to April 1 championships in The Bahamas.

Six athletes won their events, while others finished in the top three.

St Elizabeth Technical’s Kimone Green and Jauvney James, Munro College’s Duran Crooks and Herbert Thomas, Cornwall College’s Warren Barrett, and Petersfield’s Sanjae Lawrence were all winners at the two-day event.

Green, a former Carifta Games Under-17 300m champion, won the Under-20 girls’ 400m hurdles in 58.41 seconds.

Crooks won the boys’ Under-20 400m hurdles in 55.15 seconds, beating two STETHS runners — Orlando Smith 55.18 seconds and Renaldo Banton 56.34 seconds.

Another STETHS athlete Okeen Williams was second in the boys’ Under-20 400m hurdles in 51.33 seconds, beaten by Kingston College’s Omar McLeod’s 51.05 seconds.

James won the boys’ Under-17 3,000m in 9 minutes 20.47 seconds and was second in the 1,500m in 4 minutes 17.75 seconds.

Herbert Thomas, a triple winner at the Hanover Co-operative Credit Union’s Western Championships three weeks ago, won the Under-20 800m in a personal best 1 minute 53.03 seconds, but failed to complete the 1,500m race.

Cornwall College’s Carifta Under-17 champion Ricardo McKenzie, who just missed qualifying for the 800m A finals, won the B finals in a personal best 1 minute 56.00 seconds.

Lacovia High’s Paul Tate was second in the Under-17 800m in 1 minute 58.32 seconds.

Cornwall College’s Barrett was one of the surprises of the weekend when he won the Under-17 shot put with a big personal best 16.82m, well above his previous personal best 15.44m set at the Western Champs finals.

Petersfield’s Lawrence was third in the shot put but rebounded to win the discus with 46.44m, with Munro College’s Vicarie Elliot third, with 41.73m and Barrett fourth with 41.35m.

IAAF World Youth 100m champion Odail Todd was second in the Under-20 boys’ 100m in 10.64 seconds behind Racers Track Club’s Jazeel Murphy.

Munro’s Canigga Harriot was also second in the Under-17 boys’ 400m in 49.11 seconds, while STETHS’ Devon Spencer was second in the Under-20 javelin with 55.34m.

Petersfield’s Asaine Hall was third in the Under-20 girls’ 400m in 54.87 seconds, while Rusea’s High’s Stephanie Barrett took two third places, in the Under-20 girls’ 3000m 10:28.33 seconds, and 1,500m-4:43.37 seconds.
