ONE of the hottest dancehall jams in recent years is Vybz Kartel’s Summertime, a song driven by the ‘riddim’ of the same name created by Swedish producer Andreas Nilsson.

Summertime also features Popcaan’s Ravin, another massive hit.

Summertime dominated local charts and even earned Kartel a 2011 Soul Train Award nomination for Best Caribbean Performance.

Nilsson is head of the Stockholm-based Adde Instrumentals, which has produced beats for other popular Kartel songs like Bike Back, Open Up, Bubble Hard and Dedication.

Nilsson, who is in his late- 20s, has never visited Jamaica but corresponds regularly with dancehall’s big names via the Internet.

He told Splash he knew he was destined for a career in music after receiving his first instrument a (synth sampler) at age seven.

“By high school, I was deep into music production. Testing the waters of my musical abilities, I began deejaying, infusing my own creations within my sets,” Nilsson told Splash via e-mail. “I relocated to Stockholm, where I pursued an audio engineering diploma in 2005.”

Nilsson says when he was first contacted to work with dancehall’s biggest artiste, he thought it was a hoax.

“With all the scamming going on, when I received my first contact from Vybz Kartel, I thought it was a joke. He even sent me a rough demo of Bike Back, but the vocals were so distorted I still thought it was a joke. It wasn’t until Kartel sent me a video message to prove it was him,” he said.

With Summertime being such a huge success, Nilsson says he has been working feverishly to keep up with the frenetic pace of dancehall where the competition among producers is remarkably high.

His latest project is the Bad Gal riddim for Hapilos Productions.
