KEMOY Campbell ran what could be a National Senior Record, if ratified, when he clocked 13 minutes 32.82 seconds for the 5,000m at a track meet at Stanford University in Palo Alto, California yesterday.

His time is faster than former St Jago standout Mark Elliot, who ran 13 minutes 33.10 seconds in Koblenz, Germany in August 1989.

Elliot, who still holds two other records in the 1,500m and 3,000m both set in the summer of 1989; running 7 minutes 55.78 seconds for the 3,000m in Luzern, Switzerland in June, then 28 minutes 32.44 seconds over the 10,000m in Arhus, Denmark, in July before smashing the 5,000m record in August.

Campbell, who holds the National Junior Records in the 1,500m (3: 42.57 seconds) set in 2008 and the 5,000m (14:18.55) clocked at the ISSA Boys Champs in Kingston in 2010, was representing the University of Arkansas. He beat a field of over 20 runners with a devastating late-kick, according to reports.

The former Bellefield High standout was also the first Jamaican high school runner to win the 3,000m at the Penn Relays when he did so in 2010 in a time of 8:20.14, the fourth fastest time ever done over the distance at the meet.
