3 records fall on first day of Intercol meet
UWI, Mona — Three records were broken on the first day of the VMBS Intercol track and field meeting at the UWI/Usain Bolt track yesterday.
Leading the way was Travis Smikle, the UWI World Youth bronze medallist, who erased O’Dwayne Richards’ 58.18 metres by hurling the men’s discus 63.48 metres to capture the event ahead of GC Foster’s Shane Dodd, who threw 53.47 metres, and teammate Oshane Harris’ 47.60 metres.
UTech’s Stephane McPherson was in record-breaking mood also, taking the women’s 400m hurdles in a new time 58.38 seconds, erasing Rushell Clayton’s 58.55 seconds set last year.
Simoya Campbell of UTech won the women’s 800 metres in a new time of 2 minutes 09.01 seconds.
Smikle was pleased with his throw. “I have been throwing in the 50s all season and it is good that I have broken the 60 barrier throwing 63.48 metres and breaking the record. I feel good about this and taking into consideration the wind, therefore my technique is coming on.”
Smikle will be looking forward to the UTech Classics, Penn Relays and an overseas meet to sharpen his technique for the World University Games and World Championships later this year.
Meanwhile, Jason Young of UWI and Carrie Russell of UTech retained their 100m titles with 10.57 seconds and 11.58 seconds, respectively, in strong headwind.
Akeem Robertson leapt a personal best 2.08 metres in winning the high jump, while JO Wayne Hibbert of UWI won the 800m in 1 minute, 51.91 seconds.
Points standing at press time: UWI lead with 96 points, ahead of GC Foster on 75, UTech on 59 in the men’s category after seven finals, while after six finals in the women’s category, UTech lead with 74 points, ahead of GC Foster on 60, and UWI on 23.
The meet resumes at noon today.
