NORTH East St Ann member of parliament Shahine Robinson is to pay $4 million in legal costs to People’s National Party (PNP) member Manley Bowen, a fraction of the $15 million Bowen is claiming.

Bowen slapped the MP with legal fees of $15,373,547 after she admitted in the Supreme Court in September 2010 to having held United States citizenship when she was elected to Parliament in 2007.

The court subsequently declared the North East St Ann seat vacant and Robinson retook it in a by-election after renouncing the US citizenship.

Robinson, a Jamaica Labour Party MP, appealed the amount in legal costs being claimed by Bowen. She contended that $4 million is the most she should pay.

Yesterday, Justice Lennox Campbell was scheduled to make a ruling on Robinson’s appeal, but the matter was rescheduled for a date after the MP pays over the sum to the law firm Knight, Junor & Samuels which is representing Bowen. The $4million is to be paid over on or before May 7. The matter will be called up again on June 27.

Robinson is being represented by Queen’s Counsel Ransford Braham and Nesta-Claire Hunter under the instruction of Ernest A Smith & Company.
