Morgan breaks own discus record
MONTEGO BAY, St James — Olympian Jason Morgan continued his good early season form on Saturday when he broke his own discus meet record at the McNeese State University Spring Time Classic held on the university campus in Lake Charles, Louisiana.
Morgan, who set the old record of 62.77m when he won there last year in his season opener, improved the mark to 64.00m on his way to beating another Jamaican Shaun Haughton who was second with 53.55m. Sam Houston State University’s Brek Christensen was third with 49.90m.
Morgan, the former Calabar High and Louisiana Tech athlete, was competing for the second time this season after opening with 65.94m at a meet in Rushton, Louisiana, on March 16, the fourth best throw so far this season.
Only Australian Julian Wruck, who has the three best throws so far, has thrown further than Morgan, who is hoping to compete at the IAAF World Championships in Moscow this summer.
Meanwhile, former Jamaican national representative shot putter Nadia Alexander set a new personal best 16.72m at the Mason Spring Invitational in Fairfax, Virginia, on Saturday.
The former Manning’s School and St Hugh’s representative, who switched her allegiance to St Vincent and the Grenadines last year, broke her four-year personal best of 16.68m, which she set while winning the college women’s title at Penn Relays in 2009.
Saturday’s mark is also a new St Vincent national record which she has broken five times; three times last year and the second time this season.
Alexander, who also represented Jamaica at the 2010 Commonwealth Games in Delhi, India, is 50 centimetres from the B qualifying standard of 17.20m for the IAAF World Championships set for Moscow, Russia, later in August.
