…to miss JII Meet again
FORMER 100m world record holder Asafa Powell is recovering quickly from his injury, but not fast enough and will again miss the Jamaica International Invitational Meet set for May 4 at the National Stadium.
Powell, 30, who got injured a few weeks ago in Australia and was joined on the sidelines by Yohan Blake, the 100m World Champion, said his recovery is coming on nicely.
“The injury is coming on quite well and getting better very fast. I didn’t think it was anything serious, but it was more serious than I thought it was. But it still wasn’t an injury to keep me out for weeks. It’s a two-week injury and I am back into training right now,” he noted.
Regarding the JII Meet, Powell said.
“I am not sure. I am not going to rush it and push it. I haven’t competed at that meet for a while and I really wanted to, but I am not ready and I am not going to push it.”
Powell, who has been plagued by injuries through-out his career, said he is taking it one day at a time. “I don’t want to go on the track as soon as I feel good. I want to go on the track when I know I am ready, and ready to run fast, so I am not going to put a time on it. It’s pretty soon,” he advised.
With the 2013 Moscow World Championships set for August, Powell is cognisant of the fact that he will have to make Jamaica’s team first at the trial set for June, before thinking about his assault on the World Championships.
“We have our little world championship here in Jamaica… if all goes well, to be honest, and the top three or top four athletes run as expected in Jamaica, you will see the same results at the World Championships,” he predicted.
Jamaica, led by Usain Bolt, Yohan Blake and Powell — are expected to repel the challenge of the Americans with Justin Gatlin, Tyson Gay, Ryan Bailey, and a renewed Darvis Patton.
“It’s just for us to stay injury free and definitely you will see the same results in Russia,” he reiterated.
