In charge – Jamaica zoom in on victory against CCC

TITLE-holders Jamaica survived a five-wicket haul by pacer Dawayne Sealy to wrest first innings honours from the Combined Campuses and Colleges (CCC) on day two of the regional four-day match at Sabina Park in Kingston.

At close of play, just after 5:00 pm yesterday, the CCC were 94-4 in their second innings — only six runs ahead of the Jamaicans.

The third day’s proceedings are scheduled for a 9:30 start this morning.

The batsmen set to resume are captain Kyle Corbin, not out on zero after seeing off 18 deliveries, and veteran left-hander Floyd Reifer, who is yet to face a ball.

Scores: Combines Campuses 150 (52.4 overs) & 94-4 (26 overs); Jamaica 238 (91.5 overs).

Jamaica, who won the previous five regional first-class tournaments, resumed from their overnight 62-4 and passed the CCC’s modest first innings score of 150 before being dismissed for 238.

In-form middle-order batsman Andre McCarthy, making his regional four-day debut, top scored for Jamaica with a fluent 46, while number 10 batsman Jamie Merchant, also in his maiden first class match, chipped in with an attacking 36.

All-rounder and stand-in captain David Bernard supported with a patient 35, while opener Brenton Parchment made 32 on Thursday.

Sealy, generally bowling a tidy line and length, extracted fair bounce from the Sabina pitch, to finish with 5-58 under generally sunny conditions.

Left-arm wrist-spinner Kristopher Ramsaran picked up 2-32.

Trailing by 88 runs, the Combined Campuses openers Shacoya Thomas and left-hander Anthony Alleyne raced to a fifty-run first-wicket stand that exposed the largely wayward bowling from the seamers Brian Buchanan and left-armer Sheldon Cotterell.

The initial burst, which saw the visiting team at times scoring over six runs per over, came to an end when medium pacer Bernard trapped Thomas (35) leg before wicket at 68-1.

Alleyne (39) was also dismissed via the lbw route off the bowling of leftarm spinner Nikita Miller, as Jamaica pegged back the CCC late in the day.

Miller, who got adequate bounce and at times, big turn from the batting surface, also sent back Nekoli Parris (7) and nightwatchman Kesrick Williams (2) to reach a total of 43 wickets in the competition. Miller has so far taken 3-7, while Bernard has 1-27.

The Jamaicans, who are top of the preliminary table, are already safely through to next week’s semi-finals, while the Combined Campuses have no chance of progressing to the last four. Scoreboard
