Tuff Gong assists ‘Deadly Headley’
MUSICIAN Headley ‘Deadly Headley’ Bennett has received assistance from the Tuff Gong Foundation, three months after appealing for help to meet medical demands.
The 82-year-old saxophonist — who played on Bob Marley’s first song, Judge Not in 1962 — told the Jamaica Observer that he suffers from prostrate problems and other ailments.
The Marley Foundation’s financial donation will go toward Bennett’s medical expenses and rent.
A past student of the Alpha Boys School, Bennett was a top session musician during the early 1960s when he played on Judge Not, which was produced by Leslie Kong.
One of Bennett’s finest moments is his searing solo on singer Delroy Wilson’s 1965 hit song Dancing Mood.
During the 1960s, he was a member of the Studio One house band as well as guitarist Lynn Taitt’s band The Jets and The Mighty Vikings.
A decade later, Bennett joined the Roots Radics Band and played on several big hits by Bunny Wailer and Gregory Isaacs.
