Dwight Thomas second in World Challenge 110m hurdles
KINGSTON, Jamaica — Jamaican sprint hurdler Dwight Thomas Tuesday placed second in his event at the IAAF World Challenge in Beijing, China. Two other local athletes competed at the meet.
Thomas clocked 13.44 seconds to finish behind American David Oliver who took the event in 13.16 seconds. Another American, reigning World Champion Jason Richardson, was third on 13.48 seconds.
In the women’s 100 metres veteran sprinter Aleen Bailey could only manage fourth in 11.36 seconds.
Nigerian, Blessing Okagbare, a long jump bronze medallist from the 2008 Beijing Olympics, won the event in 11.04 seconds.
Mikele Barber of the US was second in 11.30 seconds while Ruddy Zang Milama of Gabon was third in 11.32 seconds.
A second Jamaican, Sherone Simpson, was disqualified.
Bailey also competed in the 200 metres where she finished fifth in 23.42 seconds, behind Olympic champion Allyson Felix and two other Americans LaShauntea Moore (22.85) and Ebony Floyd (23.19).
Also of note, the men’s 100m was won by American Justin Gatlin (9.91 seconds). Gatlin’s time makes him the second fastest in the event this year, behind Tyson Gay who ran 9.86 seconds earlier this month. Second went to another American, Mike Rodgers who completed the event in 9.96 seconds.
