Junior Squash champs shine at Hi-Lyte Tourney
Junior Squash champions Mia Mahfood, Alyssa Mullings and Ashante Smith easily won their respective age-group titles at the Hi-Lyte Championships which was held recently at the Liguanea Club in Kingston.
The round-robin tournament was contested by close to 30 young players ranging in ages between seven and 18.
At the event, Mullings, the reigning All Jamaica and Caribbean Under-15 girls’ champion, continued her dominant form, winning the Under-15 mixed category. Playing against both male and female opponents, Mullings blew through the competition to take her age-group title without losing a match.
Reigning All Jamaica Under-19 boys’ champion Ashante Smith also finished the tournament with a clean record. Smith fought off spirited attacks from Under-15 boys’ champion Julian Morrison and former Under-15 boys’ champion Jake Mahfood to emerge victorious.
Similarly, reigning All Jamaica Under-13 girls’ champion Mia Mahfood won all five of her matches to take her age-group title.
While the champions were in impressive form, other young players stole their share of the spotlight.
Young Tom Casali also turned in a stellar performance, remaining undefeated to win the Under-11 boys’ category. In a similar vein, Adam Ardito took the boys’ Under-13 title without losing a match.
In the girls’ open category which was contested by players between the age of 15 and 19, Sarah Conway took care of business, disposing of her opponents to finish the tournament also with a perfect record.
The Hi-Lyte Championships is one of the last warm-up tournaments for the youngsters before the All Jamaica Junior Championship, which is scheduled for late June and the Caribbean Junior Championships which will be held in Trinidad and Tobago in July.
