BRIDGETOWN, Barbados (CMC) — Rising South Africa fast-bowling star Vernon Philander, Australian shotgun batsman Steve Smith, and top Bangladesh all-rounder Shakib-ul-Hasan are three of several international players who will feature in next month’s Caribbean Premier League (CPL) draft.

Organisers on Thursday announced the names of the remaining international players and the West Indies elite players who will form Pool A and Pool B of the draft that takes place in Jamaica on June 5.

Philander, 27, has emerged as one of the leading pacemen in international cricket, grabbing 89 wickets in 16 Tests, including nine five-wicket hauls. He is ranked second in the ICC Test bowler ratings.

The 23-year-old Smith, meanwhile, has already gained a reputation as a fearsome striker of the ball, while Shakib is ranked in the top three of the all-rounder ratings of every format of the game.

“We have secured a broad selection of cricket talent that we feel will appeal to cricket fans everywhere,” said Jamie Stewart, CPL commercial director.

“The variety of players, from the experienced and well-established to the rising star on the cricket scene, should make the inaugural CPL an exciting tournament that showcases the best of the best.”

The trio will be joined by the Australian quartet of Aaron Finch, Dirk Nannes, Luke Pomersbach, and Shaun Marsh; Pakistan’s Shoaib Malik and Umar Akmal, along with South Africa’s Albie Morkel, New Zealand’s Daniel Vettori and Bangladesh’s Tamim Iqbal.

These players will form Pool A, while Elton Chigumbura of Zimbabwe, South Africans Davy Jacobs and Justin Kemp, Kiwis James Franklin and Mark Guptil, and Ireland’s Kevin O’Brien comprise International Pool B.

Meanwhile, veteran left-hander Shiv Chanderpaul and elegant stroke-maker Darren Bravo are among 14 regional players named in West Indies Pool A.

Chanderpaul, in the twilight of his career, has not played an international T20 in three years, but has continued to ply his trade in T20 leagues in Sri Lanka and Bangladesh.

In contrast, Bravo has come to the fore as one of the region’s leading batsmen in all three formats and has already been tipped by many for future greatness. He averages nearly 45 from 23 Tests and has already stroked four centuries.

Chanderpaul and Bravo will be joined by Andre Russell, Denesh Ramdin, Dwayne Smith, Fidel Edwards, Johnson Charles, Kemar Roach, Kieran Powell, Lendl Simmons, Ramnaresh Sarwan, Ravi Rampaul, Samuel Badree and Tino Best.

The draft also includes Pool B for West Indies players, which comprises cricketers who have played mostly regional cricket, and Pool C which comprises under-23 players from across the region.

Right-hander Adrian Barath, who has played 15 Tests, along with fellow West Indies players wicketkeeper Carlton Baugh and Narsingh Deonarine, is among those players who have been installed in Pool B.

A total of 90 players will be contracted to play in the inaugural CPL, which will run from July 30 to August 24, and will be played in Antigua and Barbuda, Barbados, Guyana, Jamaica, St Lucia and Trinidad and Tobago.
