Hit or Miss – Bongo Nyah
Stephen Marley, featuring Damian Marley & Spragga Benz
HETTO Youths International continues their musical onslaught this year with Bongo Nyah, the latest offering from Stephen Marley. The track features Damian Marley and Spragga Benz.
Bongo Nyah is the first cut from Revelation Part II: The Fruit of Life, Stephen Marley’s third solo album, which is due later this year.
An underrated aspect of the Marley clan’s many talents is their ability to seamlessly tackle genres outside of reggae and dancehall.
In Bongo Nyah, Stephen Marley creates a congo-drum heavy instrumentation, which features all the sonic aesthetics of a hip-hop production. The great thing about this genre mash-up is that neither the dancehall or reggae foundations of the track feel overpowered, despite the immense hip-hop influence present.
In keeping with the meaning of the track’s title, Stephen and Damian Marley, alongside Spragga Benz, spit hard-core militant Rastafari inspired lyrics, laced with an aggressive demeanour in flow.
An interesting observation Stephen Marley projects is that both Mind Control and Revelation Part I: The Root of Life, his first two albums, had trifecta-led first singles, featuring Damian Marley and Buju Banton. These singles were Traffic Jam and Jah Army.
With no Banton available, Stephen Marley continued his growing custom with Bongo Nyah, and it’s safe to say that this is a good kick-off for his latest project, and another solid first single for Stephen Marley.
