Sprinter O’Hara leads team to World Youth Championships
WORLD Youth leaders Michael O’Hara, Devaughn Baker and Yanique Thompson have been named in a 25-member team to represent Jamaica at the 9th IAAF World Youth Championships to be held in Donetsk, Ukraine in early July, the Jamaica Observer has learnt.
The team will comprise 13 boys and 12 girls.
O’Hara set a World Youth leading 10.39 seconds in the 100m and a joint World Youth leading 20.75 seconds in the 200m, both personal bests at last weekend’s JAAA/Supreme Ventures National Junior Championships at the National Stadium.
Thompson, for her part, lowered her personal best in the 100m hurdles to 13.23 seconds.
Baker, the World Youth leader in the 400m, easily won his event last week as well to cement his place on the team.
The full list of athletes were expected to be released this week, but the Observer was informed it has been pushed back to early next week.
Wolmer’s Girls’ Jonielle Smith, who won the girls Under-18 sprint double is also on the list believed to be.
Meanwhile, the list is also expected to include three throwers of the five who qualified for the championships. Those making the team are the Edwin Allen High trio of Demar Gayle who won both the Under-18 discus throw and shot put, the latter in a personal best 18.32m with the 5kg implement; Paul-Ann Gayle and Rochell Frazer.
The boys’ list will include Okeen Williams and Marvin Williams of St Elizabeth Technical, Jaheel Hyde, Waseem Williams, Obryan Waysome, Christoffe Bryan, Raheem Chambers and Odane Bernard of Donald Quarrie High School who medalled in the sprints.
Sakquine Cameron, who has been injured most of the season, is also in the team, it is understood. Also said to be included are overseas-based Daeshon Gordon, who won the 400m hurdles, Andrenetta Knight, Safia Morgan, Tifanny James, Rushell Burton and Tamara Moncrieffe.
