MONTEGO BAY, St James — Yohan Blake’s handlers are expected to make an announcement tomorrow that will shed light on the athlete’s injury status and to say whether or not from their perspective he has any chance of defending his IAAF World Championships 100m title at the August 10-18 staging in Moscow, Russia.

Cubie Seegobin, Blake’s agent, told the Jamaica Observer late last week that the sprinter had flown to Germany to seek treatment on a bothersome right hamstring and he (Seegobin) would be making a comment to the media come tomorrow.

Seegobin had also confirmed reports that Blake left the island last Wednesday for Germany to seek treatment from world-renowned Dr Hans-Wilhelm Muller-Wohlfahrt who has treated several top sports stars, including Blake’s training partner, double world record holder Usain Bolt.

If he should miss the World Championships it would be a massive blow to not just Jamaica’s expected medal haul but also the men’s 4x100m relay team. Blake had fitted in nicely after former World Record holder Asafa Powell missed the Daegu World Championships as well as last year’s Olympic Games where Jamaica had set world records of 37.04 seconds and 36.84 seconds, respectively.

Powell will also be absent from the team to Moscow after finishing seventh in the men’s 100m finals at the JAAA/Supreme Ventures National Senior Championships in pedestrian 10.22 seconds by his standards.

Blake, an Olympic Games double sprint silver medallist, has raced sparingly this season after being been hampered by a hamstring injury he picked up at the UTech Classic in April in what was to have been his first 100m race of the season.

Blake was midway the race when he grabbed his hamstring and stopped, but was able to walk off the track on his own and the injury was not thought to be serious at the time.

He tweeted about 40 minutes after the race that “it was just a cramp” , but two days later his coach at Racers Track Club, Glen Mills, told journalists that the injury was worst than first thought and the sprinter would miss some training time to properly recuperate.

Blake retuned to competition eight weeks later, in a 200m race at the National Stadium in one of the JAAA development meets and won in 20.72 seconds. Two weeks later, on the eve of the JAAA/Supreme Ventures National Senior Trials, Seegobin sent out a release that said: “Yohan’s coach is not satisfied with the progress of his injury and hence his level of fitness will not allow him to compete at this time. We will continue to assess the situation and re-evaluate as we approach the World Championships.”

As defending champion, Blake would have earned a bye to the World Championships and could miss the National Championships without repercussions.
