Under The Dryer: Fab Summer Hairdos

If, like many of us, a long weekend on the north coast leaves you panicky — without the services of your hairdresser — relax! We’ve got you covered with five fab hairdo options that are DIY simple and a breeze to maintain.

familycircle.com.

FISHTAIL FUN

Rock a sleek fishtail this weekend. It’s the perfect way to look and (stay) cool in the sweltering heat, and is ideal for both a day at the poolside and a night of non-stop partying.

Here’s How To Get The Look:

• Blow-dry hair using fingers until it’s three-quarters of the way dry, then work in mousse from root to end.

• Make a deep side part and swoop the rest of your hair over to the opposite side. To start the fishtail braid, divide hair into two sections. Work your way down by taking a thin piece from the outside right section and joining it with the left.

• Next do the reverse: take a thin piece of hair from the left section and join it with the right. Continue to decide the length of your fish plait.

• Secure with an elastic band.

WAVELENGTH

If you have a long, majestic mane then this look — at once sexy and casual — is perfect for you.

Here’s how to achieve this look:

1 Create a side part and pull back damp hair into a low bun.

2 Secure with hairpins and let dry.

3 Remove hairpins to loosen bun when hair is dry.

It will have that automatic wave formation from the bun.

SUN ‘BUN’

Naturally you’ll feel cooler with your hair pulled back in one, but why not look as cool as you feel with a classic bun? You may even style it up a bit by adding braids to the bun, giving it a modern summer twist.

Here’s how to get the look:

1 After applying a spray gel throughout damp locks, blow-dry hair away from face. Create volume and lift by parting top of head into a horseshoe shape and dividing hair into three horizontal sections.

2 Use a brush at roots to lightly brush the surface of this area to smooth out exterior and pull into a ponytail just below the crown.

3 Divide into two sections. Twist one part clockwise into a bun using bobby pins to secure as you go.

4 Braid remaining hair and wrap counterclockwise around the base of the bun.

5 Finish with a light holding spray.

BEACH BRAIDS

Here’s how to get the look:

1 Section the hair you wish to braid.

2 Separate into three strands crossing right over middle and then left over middle.

3 Repeat step two for all sections of the hair you wish to braid. It’s classic and timeless and easy to do.

Here’s how to get the look:

1 Apply spray gel along hairline and use a brush to blow-dry hair away from face and back into a pony.

2 Secure with an elastic band.

3 Smooth out uneven areas with a fine-tooth comb, paying special attention to baby hairs.

4 Use a few strands of hair from the ponytail to cover the elastic.

5 Finish with a holding spray.

Go for lengthy waves like Kelly Rowland’s (above) or shorter bobs like the onesported by actress Taraji P Henson (below).
