Thursday Food: The New 24 SEVEN Café

Location, location, location is what real estate brokers have long championed. Who knew, however, that moving a café from the right to the left would create such a positive impression! The 24 SEVEN Café in its new location at the Jamaica Pegasus hotel — an extension of the wide, spacious lobby has been up and running since June — continues to find favour with patrons like David Hylton, senior manager for project implementation at the Housing Agency of Jamaica, who shared with us how much he likes the place. “I come here all the time, usually for coffee and the bagels. It’s a great place to conduct mini meetings, and the desserts are excellent.”

Thursday Life can now be added to the list. We also love the vegetarian red pea soup.

Design details include the boulevard effect, which successfully takes the outdoors (Knutsford Boulevard) in, as well as the use of an orchid garden, complete with dragons, that pay homage to the owners’ Chinese heritage.

There is, at once, the hustle and bustle synonymous with a popular city hotel as well as the intimacy of a café where deals are brokered over an early-morning coffee, full breakfast, snack or lunch around the well-appointed communal work table, engineered to facilitate the use of electronic devices. There’s also free WiFi.

Ladies who lunch feel quite at home in the trendy endroit and are appreciative of the soft lighting (finally someone understands that minute, but oh so important, detail that makes both the food and patrons appear that much more attractive!). Fingers crossed that others cotton on, too.

That said, with no shortage of cafés in the city, what gives this one the edge — ample parking and security aside — is definitely the fare: from the café’s signature New Kingston Steak Panini and the Knutsford Boulevard Pork Panini to the peanut butter and jelly sandwich on the kids’ menu — enjoyed by many a corporate exec, whose names we won’t call at this time.

We share a peek. Be warned: it’ll make you hungry…
