JP arrested in land fraud
A justice of the peace implicated in the theft of a plot of land in Denbigh, Clarendon also appeared before the court.
Jennifer Smith Keane-Dawes, a paralegal of Caribbean Estate in St Catherine, was summoned to court on a charge of conspiracy to defraud.
She is jointly charged with Zela Dell Johnson, who reportedly orchestrated the plan to capture the land owned by a farmer.
According to police reports, the complainant gave Johnson his certificate of title for safe keeping in 1996.
It is further alleged that after two years, Johnson reported that the title was lost and applied for a replacement.
However, it was reported that she added herself, her ex-husband and her three daughters as co-owners of the land.
Following that, it was also reported that she applied for a property transfer, claiming that the complainant had gifted the land to her and the other co-owners and was successful.
Johnson then reportedly caused the land to be subdivided into 17 plots by virtue of a Transfer of Land by Partition Document which was purportedly signed by the complainant and witnessed by Keane-Dawes in her capacity as a JP.
But, according to court documents, the complainant was not in a position to sign and was overseas at the alleged time of the signing.
However, on Thursday when Keanes-Dawes appeared before court, the matter was rescheduled for August 22 when Johnson will also appear in court.
