The Private Blend
Thursday Life caught up with Arturo Savage, Brand Ambassador, Ambassador Reserve brands — Johnnie Walker West Latin America and the Caribbean inside Kingston’s most stylish bar, The Regency Bar & Lounge, located at the Terra Nova All-Suite Hotel.
What does a brand ambassador do?
Brand ambassadors visit all the countries in the region to educate persons about the brands, show attributes, entertain the public during tastings and share information about Johnnie Walker that will help to create a better appreciation of the brand. It is all fun for me.
Why do you represent Johnnie Walker?
There is no such thing as a bad whisky; there are just some that are very good. Johnnie Walker is outstanding. The brand is about flavour, not age. We have a huge range of flavours, we have whiskies from four corners of Scotland.
What is the main difference between whisky and other spirits?
Whisky has flavour… Tasting occasion of rum and whisky is similar.
In your bio you are noted as being the chef of whisky reserve dinners, what does this entail?
I do food pairings. Pairing is always done between food and wine; however, my job is to do pairings with Johnnie Walker as well. Big food flavours go best with big flavours of whisky.
What is the purpose of your trip to Jamaica?
I am here primarily to launch two new expressions in Jamaica. The innovative and luxury brands of Johnnie Walker Gold (for celebration) and Platinum (for private outings and home consumption). The Platinum is the best 18-year-old Johnnie Walker has ever made.
I have already done quite a bit of staff and sales training, as well.
What is the perfect serve?
We have a whisky for each drinking occasion.
Perfect serve — there is only one correct way to drink whisky, and that is the way you like it. Responsibly.
Gold Label — tall glass with crushed ice and a slice of lemon/lime.
Platinum label — a velvety, extraordinary blend, to be had neat. Enjoy it as it comes from the bottle.
