THE Television Jamaica’s All Angles team on Tuesday won the Jamaica Broilers Fair Play Awards with their entry entitled ‘The Bleaching Phenomenon’ at a ceremony at the Terra Nova All-Suite Hotel in St Andrew .

The All Angles team of Dionne Jackson-Miller, Archibald Gordon, Ivan Shaw, Glenford Campbell, Andre Jebbinson, Walford Gibbinson and Shakur Brown collected the trophy and a cash prize of $300,000 — the highest payout in the 13-year history of the competition.

The audio-visual entry took an in-depth look into skin bleaching and its social effects. One judge described the entry as an honest view- point, while another described it as an excellent journalistic treatment of a troubling topic.

There were 26 entries in total from across the print, television and radio media landscape. These included 13 entries from print, seven from television and six from radio.

Apart from increasing the cash prize, the organiser decided that all entries would be judged in one category, a shift from previous year’s when print and electronic entries were treated as separate categories.

Chief judge Professor Hopeton Dunn lauded the quality of this year’s entries. “It was particularly challenging. The overwhelming majority tackled human interest issues. There were noticeably few entries in the area of industry, business and commerce,” he said.

President and Chief Executive Officer of the Jamaica Broilers Group Christopher Levy urged media practitioners to remain steadfast in informing and educating the public. “The role that the media are playing in this country has become more and more relevant and important. Do not lose sight of the fact that you have a greater responsibility,” he said.

A plaque in honour of the late Christine Bell, who played a fundamental role in organising the awards, was presented to the Gleaner for winning the most awards.
