JPS Foundation to invest $2 million in York Town Basic
THE JPS Foundation will be investing approximately $2 million to provide York Town Basic School in Clarendon with electricity, as part of the foundation’s model school initiative.
York Town Basic is one of three schools selected by the recently formed foundation, for the attainment of model school status. The foundation aims to implement several initiatives in these schools over a three-year period to help them meet the basic standards set by the Early Childhood Commission (ECC).
The foundation’s immediate focus for York Town Basic is the provision of electricity for the school, which has been operating without power for decades.
Speaking during a visit to the school recently, JPS President & CEO Kelly Tomblin said the cost of getting power to the school and implementing other projects to help the institution meet the ECC standards would be borne by JPS and its employees.
In handing over a personal contribution of $100,000 to the school, Tomblin said the JPS Foundation projects would be based on partnership.
“The model school project will be a collaboration between the entity JPS, our employees, and the community. Employee giving is an important part of our foundation. JPS employees will be contributing their money, their time and their talents, as we invest in Jamaica’s future,” she said.
